September: identify an apple with a notebook
Apple color and shape can suggest possibilities, but a photograph rarely proves a cultivar. Sun exposure, rootstock, maturity, weather, and crop load can make fruit from the same variety look surprisingly different.
The most useful clue is often when the apple becomes ripe.
Build an evidence set
Collect several typical apples from different parts of the tree. Record:
- first date fruit tastes ripe;
- whether ripe fruit releases with a gentle lift and twist;
- whether fruit drops before or after eating quality peaks;
- overall shape and size range;
- stem length and stem-cavity shape;
- calyx or blossom-end shape;
- background color, blush, stripes, lenticels, and russeting;
- flesh color, density, juiciness, sweetness, acidity, and aroma;
- seed color when the fruit tastes ripe;
- tree habit, bearing pattern, and known history.
Photograph the whole tree, fruit on the tree, several fruits together, the stem end, blossom end, and a clean cross-section. Include a ruler and neutral light.
Separate description from identification
Write what you observe before choosing a candidate name. “Yellow-green background with broken red stripes; tart on September 12; dense cream flesh” is evidence. “Probably McIntosh” is a hypothesis.
Compare the full set with documented regional cultivars. Old New England orchards may contain common commercial apples, local cultivars, seedlings, or mislabeled trees. When identity matters—for conservation, propagation, or sale—genetic testing or an experienced pomologist is stronger than visual comparison.
Repeat the notebook across two seasons. Ripening order and storage behavior often discriminate between similar-looking candidates better than one year's color.
